The present lot is a rare cityscape/landscape work by S. H. Raza, an artist primarily celebrated for his explorations of Cubism and abstraction, rooted in spirituality and nature. During his formative years, like many of his contemporaries, Raza painted in a realistic mode. In 1943, he moved to Bombay to enroll at the Sir J.J. School of Art, and the sights and sounds of the city left a lasting impression on him. His watercolors depict the architecture of Bombay and other cities he visited, capturing the urban milieu with sensitivity and detail as this particular work
This work is characterized by realism and impressionistic tendencies, presenting cityscapes and rural landscapes with a keen eye for atmosphere. However Raza's career progressed, his work evolved toward abstraction, incorporating elements of nature, Indian culture, and spiritual exploration through motifs such as the Bindu.
