The book offering a detailed account and a powerful critique of the British colonial administration's response to the devastating Great Famine. This historical primary source documents the immense suffering and massive excess mortality estimated between 5.6 and 9.6 million deaths in the Madras and Bombay Presidencies and the Province of Mysore. Digby, a journalist who witnessed the events first-hand, argued that the disaster was intensified by strict laissez-faire economic policies, continued grain exports, and inadequate relief efforts. The book became a crucial text for early Indian nationalists challenging the economic morality of the British Raj.
