At the upper part of the title page appears a handwritten inscription: “Presented to the Author’s Club by J. C. Newth.” The Authors’ Club, founded in London in 1891, is a distinguished literary institution established as a meeting place for writers, publishers, agents, journalists, academics, and others professionally engaged in literature. Although the identity of J. C. Newth remains uncertain, the inscription provides an important trace of provenance and a notable connection to this prestigious literary society.
