With a full account of the Mutiny of the Bengal Army; of the Insurrection in Western India; and an exposition of the alleged cause, half leather binding, title in gilt on spine. 125 plates in all volumes, 1 table in volume 1.

A well-illustrated mid- 19th century history of India by a noted member of the East India Company, with an important account of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Martin served as a member of the Court of Directors of the East India Company and traveled much of the world, including in India, as a surgeon, botanist, naturalist and historian. His comprehensive history is particularly valuable for its inside account of the commercial aspects of life in India and his account of the Indian Mutiny. The work is admirably illustrated with numerous steel-engraved views of the principal cities and sites in India, including Delhi, Agra, Lucknow, Hyderabad, etc., as well as views in the Himalayas and portraits of various Indian princes and notables.
