One Plan of Kaltat - i - ghilzie fort, one large folded map or sketch of Kaffiristan and one half page sketch of the native of Kandahar created during the mission

This book contains Major H. B. Lumsden’s detailed résumé of the Kandhar Mission, submitted to the Secretary of the Chief Commissioner of the Punjab in 1858. It sets out one hundred points outlining his observations on Afghanistan, its political conditions, the character and policies of its rulers, and the organisation and capabilities of its army. The work also reflects the broader strategic concerns of the British-Indian frontier during the mid-nineteenth century, especially in relation to Kandhar and the surrounding regions. Added later is the supplementary report of the 1856 expedition into Upper Membrane and Koorum, along with its appendices, which further strengthens the value of the volume as a historical and administrative record.

BINDING: Handsome binding of blue cloth boards with decorative embossed detailing, blue leather spine richly gilt, and beautiful blue and silver marbled endpapers.

The initial four pages display insect-bite losses, while the remaining pages show only minor and sporadic insect holes. The large folding map has a tear along the centre left. The cover boards exhibit scattered stains but remain firm and intact. Overall, the book is in fair condition, with the text largely clean and legible throughout.
