Asiatic Researches, or Transactions of the Society Instituted in Bengal for Inquiring into the History and Antiquities, the Arts, Sciences, and Literature of Asia, was the original journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. Founded by Sir William Jones in Calcutta (now Kolkata) on January 15, 1784, the Society aimed to promote scholarly research into the history, culture, languages, and sciences of the Indian subcontinent and the wider Asian region.
The first volume of Asiatick Researches appeared in late 1788, featuring contributions from Jones and other leading scholars. The series continued through twenty volumes, concluding in 1839. In 1842, it was formally discontinued and replaced by the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, which had begun publication in 1832 to encompass a broader range of scientific and literary subjects. The journal continues today as the Journal of the Asiatic Society.
The Asiatic Researches series played a foundational role in the development of Oriental studies. Its publications facilitated the translation of ancient Indian texts into English, advanced historical and linguistic scholarship, and laid the groundwork for major cultural and scientific institutions such as the Indian Museum in Calcutta.

Volumes include full-page or folded plates featuring ancient Indian script inscriptions, such as Brāhamī and Kharoṣṭhī, discovered in archaeological findings. The number of these plates is indicated as ‘Text Plate’ in the illustration details.
