This book is a famous 18th-century work of history and political philosophy written by the French philosopher, historian, and priest Abbé Guillaume Thomas François Raynal. The first edition was published in 1770, and subsequent revised and augmented editions, such as one in ten volumes.
It was a key piece of democratic writing in the period leading up to the French Revolution. Its ideas, including a savage indictment of slavery and European colonization, led to it being banned by the French parliament, which only increased its popularity.
