THE GRAPHIC: AN ILLUSTRATED WEEKLY NEWS PAPER (YEAR 1875 & 1876)

INDIA ISSUE

Year: 1875

Size: 42 x 31 cm (16.5 x 12.2 inches)

Set of two Volumes of 1875 & 1876 i. The Graphic: (July - December 1875), ii. The Graphic: (Jan - June 1876)

Published by: London Office and Printed by Edward Joseph Mansfeild
Folio, PP 640+34 Numerous full page and half page plates of India. Together with 34 pages of Christmas Number.

These two volumes of The Graphic, covering the second half of 1875 & first half of 1876, stands as one of the most comprehensive visual records of the Prince of Wales's historic tour of India, undertaken on the eve of the first Imperial Durbar of 1877. The tour, which spanned from late 1875 through much of 1876, marked a significant moment in the history of British imperial diplomacy and spectacle. The Prince of Wales made an eight-month-tour of India and other colonies in 1875 and 1876.

What sets this compilation apart is its remarkable wealth of first-hand illustrations, rendered by artists who were present at the events themselves. Chief among them was William Simpson, traveling independently for the Illustrated London News, and two artist-reporters commissioned by The Graphic—Walter Charles Horsley and Herbert Johnson. Collectively, they documented the royal journey with extraordinary detail and immediacy, providing a continuous visual narrative that was relayed back to Britain through the illustrated press.

The Graphic, a pioneering British weekly illustrated newspaper, was first published on 4 December 1869 by William Luson Thomas under the imprint of Illustrated Newspapers Limited. Its influence on contemporary visual culture and the art world was profound, with admirers such as Vincent van Gogh and Hubert von Herkomer citing its illustrations as sources of inspiration.
