The Illustrated London News was the world’s first illustrated weekly news magazine, founded by Herbert Ingram and first published on May 14, 1842.

The Illustrated London News volumes from 1871 to 1876 offer a vivid portrayal of British India, blending imperial interest with dramatic reportage. 1871–1872 feature articles on natural events like famines, a Madras hurricane, a solar eclipse observed by British astronomers, and a rock inscription of an emperor’s edicts in Kathiawar. The enactment of the Indian Evidence Act (1872) is also noted. Specific piece of content highlighted the British Army’s camp of exercise at Hassan Abdul. 1873–1874 focus heavily on military presence and the devastating famine in Bengal and Bihar, with the 1874 front cover depicting the crisis in a Bengali village. In 1876, coverage centres on the Prince of Wales’s royal visit and the Great Famine, illustrating both widespread suffering and the controversial British response.

The colour supplements in these volumes are original hand-coloured wood engravings, created during the peak of Victorian innovation in illustrated publishing. A leading figure in this field was George C. Leighton, who became principal printer and later publisher of The Illustrated London News around 1850. Under his leadership, the publication produced some of the largest and most refined colour engravings of the era, employing meticulous hand-colouring on woodblock prints, sometimes in combination with metal cuts.
