Cover Drawing by a Hill Korwa artist.

BINDING: Softcover. This catalogue, published by Bharat Bhavan and featured in our auction, reflects the visionary efforts of J. Swaminathan, whose pioneering work was instrumental in elevating the status of tribal and folk art in India. As director of the Roopankar Art Museum, Swaminathan not only brought international attention to Gond and Bhil artists like Jangarh Singh Syam, a young Gond artist whose transformation from traditional wall paintings to contemporary media marked a cultural shift.
He also initiated deep, innovative engagements with communities like the Hill Korwa. His encounter with the Hill Korwa people led to the creation of over 75 unique, abstract pen drawings, linear forms resembling script and calligraphy, yet entirely original and reflective of a subconscious artistic response.
These works, now part of the Bharat Bhavan collection, challenge traditional definitions of Adivasi art, offering a rare and powerful insight into the evolving visual language of India's tribal communities.
