HOMANN HEIRS (1730 - 1848)

PENINSULA INDIAE CITRA GANGEM HOC EST ORAE CELEBERRIMAE MALABAR

INDIA'S PENINSULA GANGA THIS IS THE FAMOUS COAST OF MALABAR

Year: 1733

Size: 60.3 x 52 cm (23.7 x 20.4 inches)

Maker/Published by: Homan Heirs.

This beautiful map was published by the Homann heirs, successors of the prolific German map publishing house created by Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724), Imperial Cartographer to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. It documents Sri Lanka and the southern part of the Indian Peninsula.
It is especially noted for its wonderful decorative cartouche showing an elephant and elaborately clothed indigenous people. But the map itself shows the coastal areas in great detail and includes flags to denote the claims of various European powers (England, Denmark, France, Holland, and Portugal).

Homann Heirs (1730–1848)
Homann Heirs was a map publishing house in Germany during the late 18th century. Initially, it was run by Johann Baptist Homann, and after his death, the company was continued by his son, Johann Christoph. Christoph, perhaps realizing that he would not long survive his father, stipulated in his will that the company would be inherited by his two head managers, Johann Michael Franz and Johann George, and that would have published only under the name of ‘Homann Heirs’.
