The painting depicts A View of Chinsura; The Dutch Settlement in Bengal. The Portuguese founded the town of Hooghly- Chinsura in 1579 but the district has old heritage in the form of the great kingdom of Bhurshut.

The scenic view of the newly stablished port has been documented through this work. The soothing blue colour sky and fresh water of Hooghly river mirroring each other in this horizontally elongated composition. The setting is characterized by the ambiance of an old Indian port featuring docks, church and colonial style architecture along the waterfront. Ship and boats depicted in lower right giving us hints about the daily activity and movement of colonial and local people.
