This striking work by Partha Pratim Deb unfolds like a whimsical theatre of forms, where humour, abstraction, and a playful visual language come together. Set against a warm, rust-orange ground that evokes an arid, dreamlike landscape, the composition is dominated by three large, striped, fabric-like shapes that twist and rise like improbable mountains. Perched upon these undulating forms are small, cartoon-like human figures rendered in Deb’s characteristic simplified style each engaged in an enigmatic act of pulling or manipulating a string. Their gestures appear both purposeful and absurd, evoking a sense of human perseverance within surreal, shifting terrain.
The painting is enriched by Deb’s signature blend of folk-derived visual sensibilities and pop-art experimentation. The flat planes of colour, rhythmic stripes, and reduced figures reflect his longstanding interest in reimagining everyday material and discarded motifs into a new pictorial vocabulary. True to his practice, Deb infuses the scene with a gentle, quirky humour, an echo of his childhood aspiration to become a cartoonist, which transforms ordinary gestures into playful visual metaphors.
