This finely rendered work by B. Roy captures a poignant everyday moment along the ghats of Banaras, where social narratives unfold quietly against the majestic backdrop of temple spires and stepped riverbanks. Executed in monochrome wash, the composition centres on a young boy emerging from the water, a small bundle balanced on his head. His expressive gesture and alert gaze are directed toward an elderly man standing on the river’s edge, suggesting an exchange that echoes the handwritten Bengali inscription on the reverse translated as 'Because of money shortage I have crossed the river swimming'.

The boy’s matter-of-fact statement becomes the emotional hinge of the scene an understated revelation of hardship delivered with innocence, contrasted with the composed, authoritative air of the elder listener. Another figure, wrapped in traditional attire and seated in the foreground, adds to the layered social atmosphere of the ghats, while distant bathers and the riverbank architecture anchor the setting unmistakably in Banaras.

B. Roy’s skill lies in the way he blends narrative realism with sensitive observation: the nuanced facial expressions, the water, and the bustling yet quiet riverfront collectively transforms this moment into a subtle study of class, resilience, and human connection. The artwork stands as both an illustration of dialogue and a glimpse into lived realities along the sacred river.
