BENGAL SCHOOL RAMAYANA

UNTITLED (RAM, LAKSHMAN AND SHITA VANVASH)

Image Size: 16.8 x 21.8 cm (6.6 x 8.5 inches)

Mount/Sheet Size: 27.4 x 35 cm (10.7 x 13.7 inches)

This painting portrays a classic scene from the Ramayana, depicting Ram, Sita, and Lakshman during their Vanvash (forest exile). Set against the backdrop of a dense, shadowed forest, the trio walks barefoot along a woodland path.

At the forefront is Ram, shown with a calm yet resolute expression, holding a bow in one hand and arrows in the other. His attire is simple an ochre robe draped traditionally symbolizing his ascetic life during exile. His posture reflects leadership and quiet strength.

Walking slightly behind him is Sita, adorned in a vibrant blue sari with delicate golden borders and a soft pink veil. Her gentle demeanour radiates devotion and patience. Holding the corner of her veil, she carries herself with grace, representing purity and resilience during the hardships of exile.

Lakshman follows closely at the rear, vigilant and protective. Clad in a similar ascetic garment, he carries arrows and appears alert, embodying loyalty and unwavering dedication to his brother and sister-in-law.

The forest setting deep, mysterious, and dimly lit enhances the sense of their journey into the unknown. The earthy tones and detailed brushwork create an atmosphere of serenity mixed with quiet tension, capturing an iconic moment of devotion, duty, and sacrifice.

The work presents in overall very good condition. There is a minor area of paint loss to the upper centre, unobtrusive and not affecting the overall visual impact. The surface exhibits some natural unevenness, which appears to be inherent to the medium and consistent with the artist’s working process.
