A detailed account of a sixteen-month world tour through various countries, including Japan, China, India, Egypt, Greece, Russia, and more. Following his (author) retirement from public office and a personal bereavement in the summer of 1887, the author embarked on a world tour with two young companions. He began keeping a detailed travel journal in the form of letters for his children and local newspapers; this task, while often onerous, became a labor of love as the honest descriptions of his journey were well-received by friends. Encouraged to publish these letters as a book, he undertook the significant labor of editing them for space while maintaining the epistolary style, humbly asking for the public's kind reception despite making no claims to literary merit.
