Hancock as frontispiece, and a folded illustration of Hancock’s rubber manufacturing company, known as the Firm of Charles Macintosh and Co., London, patentees of the merchandise of Indian rubber. Thomas Hancock (1786–1865), the English inventor who founded the British rubber industry, transformed rubber manufacturing with his 1821 invention of the “masticator,” which recycled rubber scraps into usable sheets. His partnership with Charles Macintosh produced the iconic waterproof “mackintosh” coats. The book is a pioneering memoir that chronicles Hancock’s pivotal role in developing the rubber industry, detailing his experiments, inventions, sixteen patents, and early work on vulcanization—an essential firsthand record of 19th-century industrial innovation and entrepreneurship.
