Maria Graham, daughter of a rear-admiral, travelled to India in 1808, fell in love, and married Thomas Graham, a sea captain, with whom she travelled by sea around India and Ceylon. They visited Bombay, Poona, Colombo, Madras, and Calcutta, together with numerous temples and ruins, before returning to England in 1811. She went on to travel widely in South America, and following the death of her husband in 1822 married the artist Augustus Wall Callcott.
