This Robertson’s seminal work exploring the extent of ancient geographical, cultural, and commercial knowledge of India prior to the discovery of the sea route around the Cape of Good Hope. In this historical disquisition, Robertson examines classical sources Greek, Roman, and others to trace early interactions between India and the Western world through trade and travel. His rigorous analysis illuminates how India’s civilization, commerce, and scholarship were perceived in antiquity and how these perceptions shaped European understanding of Asia during the Enlightenment. Includes an extensive Appendix containing observations on the civil policy, laws, judicial proceedings, arts, sciences, and religious institutions of the Indians.
William Robertson (1721–1793) – Scottish historian and Principal of the University of Edinburgh.
