A landmark in Indian historiography. First edition of Jonathan Scott’s important English translation of Ferishta’s late 16th-century Persian history of India, one of the most authoritative sources on the Deccan and the Mughals. Published at Scott’s own expense in his native Shrewsbury, the work reflects his deep engagement with Indo-Persian scholarship. Scott served with the East India Company, acted as Persian translator during the First Anglo-Maratha War, and in 1783 was appointed private Persian translator to Governor-General Warren Hastings—who encouraged his historical research on the Mughal period.

Drawing on materials collected by his brother Captain Richard Scott and by Lieutenant-Colonel Henri Polier, Scott supplemented Ferishta’s narrative with leading contemporary sources: chiefly Mubarik-Allāh Inādat Khān for the later Deccan history and Ghulām Husayn Khān Tabātābʾī for Bengal. A significant edition, handsomely produced.
