An important work on China. Davis travelled to China in 1813 with Lord Amherst's embassy before being appointed Chief Superintendent of China for over twenty years and joint Commissioner with Lord Napier in 1834, and later Governor of Hong Kong (1844). Davis became proficient in the Chinese language and thoroughly acquainted with Chinese culture and history. Included in the work is a four-page bibliography of miscellaneous works published on China.
