The Illustrated London News was the world’s first illustrated weekly news magazine, founded by Herbert Ingram and first published on May 14, 1842.
This remarkable set of Illustrated London News volumes from 1852 to 1863 offers a vivid chronicle of British India through richly illustrated reportage and original hand-coloured engravings. Highlights include early postal reforms in Sindh (1852), the Santhal Rebellion and Awadh’s annexation (1856), and the unfolding of the Sepoy Mutiny (1857) with detailed accounts of uprisings and British retaliation. Post-rebellion volumes (1860–1862) cover administrative restructuring, the Jaintia Hills uprising, Bahadur Shah Zafar’s death, and economic expansion through plantation development in the Nilgiris. The 1863 volume features cultural and human-interest pieces such as the Cave of Elephanta, an East Indian Railway accident, and portrayals of daily life—blending reportage with imperial spectacle.
The colour supplements in these volumes are original hand-coloured wood engravings, created during the peak of Victorian innovation in illustrated publishing. A leading figure in this field was George C. Leighton, who became principal printer and later publisher of The Illustrated London News around 1850. Under his leadership, the publication produced some of the largest and most refined colour engravings of the era, employing meticulous hand-colouring on woodblock prints, sometimes in combination with metal cuts.
