First and only edition, one of the prize rarities of Indian travel literature & fine copy of Fraser’s magnificent and rare Himalayan views, A truly grand plate book, Fraser's Himala was classed at the time with Daniell's Oriental Scenery and Salt's Views in Abyssinia, costing 20 guineas to subscribers, and an even more princely 25 guineas to non-subscribers. The plates are printed on thick paper watermarked J. Whatman,' 1820.
Fraser's spectacular views were issued without text but account of his journey to the Himalaya was published at same date by same publisher under the title ‘Journal of a Tour through Part of the Snowy Range of the Himala Mountains and to the Sources of the River Ganges’ to accompany his spectacular views.
Fraser, a Scottish merchant, arrived at Calcutta in 1813, here he came in contact with George Chinnery, who helped him in developing his individual style. In 1815-16 in company with his brother William, traveled from Calcutta to Garhwal Himalayas and thence to the source of the Ganges, becoming the first European to reach Gangotri, and making sketches of the mountain scenery en route. His sketches were published in 1820 entitled 'Views in the Himala Mountains' consisting of twenty large hand coloured aquatints. During his stay in Calcutta, he made several sketches of the city. These were published between 1824-26, entitled 'Views of Calcutta and its environs' consisting of twenty four views. The plates were engraved by Robert Havell.
BINDING: Later half maroon morocco over moire cloth gilt, title & authors name in gilt on upper cover, marbled endpapers and gilt edges.
