Colebrooke was a soldier in the British Army and had a distinguished career with the Bengal Infantry from 1778 till 1808. He took part in a campaingn against Haider Ali of Mysore. While surveying the routes taken during the marches of the army under Lord Cornwallis in 1791-92, he made drawings of Seringapatam, Bangalore and the local conuntryside. These were published in 1794 under the title 'Twelve Views of Places in the Kingdom of Mysore'.
