A catalogue of his paintings from the collection of Shri Bhavani Museum, Aundh (Maharashtra).
Born on 3 June 1890 in Kolhapur, Baburao Painter or Baburao Mistri was a self-taught artist renowned for his mastery in oil painting, sculpture, and stage design. His statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Kolhapur highlights his sculpting talent. Influenced by European classical styles, he created backdrops for Gujarati-Parsi theatre and later founded the Maharashtra Film Company in 1919.
As the first Indian filmmaker to cast women in films, he broke significant barriers at a time when female roles were played by men. Tragically, much of his early work was lost in a fire at his studio, and with the rise of talkies in the 1930s, he returned to painting and sculpture.
This rare catalogue is a valuable record of artist's remarkable legacy, documenting several of his oil paintings many without his signature making it an irreplaceable piece of art history.
