S. H. Raza’s Bindu paintings from around 1980 mark his decisive turn to geometric abstraction, with the Bindu symbolizing the cosmic source of creation and life. Centred on a black circle representing the beej (seed), and surrounded by vibrant elemental colours, this work uses concentric bands of black and red against a luminous orange ground to create a meditative focus. Its bold contrasts and textured surface reflect Raza’s deep engagement with Indian metaphysical thought and spiritual symbolism.
