In this abstract landscape by K. S. Kulkarni, a rural settlement is distilled to its essential forms, with houses and temple and foliage arranged in a compact, rhythmic band along the bottom edge could of river. Red background dominates the composition, functioning more as an atmospheric colour field than a literal sky. The geometric structures, outlined in bold, graphic strokes, reflect the sensibilities of mid-century Indian modernism, where indigenous architecture is transformed into a set of distilled visual symbols. Kulkarni’s restrained palette, flattened planes, and attention to surface texture elevate the landscape into a quiet, contemplative meditation on form, memory, and mood.

Renowned for creating art that embodies a distinct sense of “Indianness” while engaging with Western influences, Kulkarni demonstrates his mastery as a balanced colourist in this untitled work. The soft, gentle tones in this cubist-inspired landscape create a harmonious interplay of colours, enriching the work’s tonal quality and enhancing its contemplative atmosphere.
