This charcoal artwork portrays a contemplative Sadhu from Banaras (Varanasi) seated in a relaxed cross-legged posture, leaning slightly back with an air of quiet detachment and spiritual calm. The artist uses expressive charcoal strokes and soft smudging to define the Sadhu’s lean ascetic body, long flowing beard, and deeply thoughtful face, with his hair tied in a traditional topknot. Strands of rudraksh beads hang across his chest, signifying devotion to Lord Shiva, while a trishul (trident) stands beside him and a kamandalu (water pot) rests near his feet - both powerful symbols of ascetic life and spiritual discipline.
The background remains loosely rendered and shadowed, creating an atmospheric depth that isolates the figure and evokes the timeless spiritual ambiance of Banaras. Through strong tonal contrasts and minimal yet meaningful details, the artist captures not only the physical presence of the Sadhu but also the serenity, wisdom, and mysticism associated with India’s ancient ascetic traditions.
