This painting illustrates the Hindu mythological episode of Kaliya Naga Mardan, in which the young Krishna subdues the multi-headed serpent, Kaliya. Executed with controlled and delicate brushwork, the composition reveals minute details, particularly in the underwater scene, where waves, bubbles, and movement are rendered with remarkable precision.
Krishna is shown standing triumphantly on the Seshnaag hoods while holding its tail, symbolizing the victory of good over evil through divine intervention. On either side, the Seshnaag wives offer lotuses and prayers in gratitude and surrender. The scene reflects the legend of Kaliya poisoning the waters of the Yamuna River until Krishna leapt in and subdued the serpent, restoring balance and harmony.
