This work by Jamini Roy is a hallmark of his Folk-inspired Modernism, showcasing a deliberate departure from Western academic realism in favor of the Kalighat pat tradition.
Executed in tempera with a restricted palette of earthy natural pigments, including yellow ochre, Indian red, and soot black, the composition centers on a figure rendered with sculptural volume and Roy’s signature exaggerated almond eyes.
The figure’s hieratic, symmetrical pose is framed by simplified geometric architectural motifs, emphasizing a flat, two-dimensional pictorial surface.
