Inscribed indistinctly and dated 'Bombay/ 1845' (lower left)The work retains its original window-cut mount, bearing printed details: 'J. S. Rundle' at the lower left, Bombay / 1845 at the lower centre, and 1815-1880 at the lower right.
J. S. Rundle's mid-19th century watercolour, masterfully employs a delicate watercolour wash technique to capture a bustling colonial maritime scene. The composition is dominated by several vessels, featuring a large, multi-masted sailing ship prominently anchored in the foreground, functioning as a strong vertical element that draws the viewer's eye upwards towards the softly rendered, atmospheric sky. The artist utilizes a restricted palette of muted blues, grays, and warm ochres to create a tranquil, luminous atmosphere, typical of the British marine painting tradition, which emphasized both topographic accuracy and an aesthetic appreciation for light and weather conditions.
